Regional trains run back frequently, so there is no need to fix a return in advance. Keep the last evening in Rome light before the move north tomorrow; a neighbourhood dinner in Trastevere suits it, though the best-known trattorias there do not take bookings.

From 27 July onward the fee does not apply at all, so where your dates fall around 26/27 July decides whether you need the voucher; either way, registering as an exempt hotel guest is free and quick.

Both islands are genuinely different from central Venice, Burano's coloured houses and Murano's glass, so the slow water-bus legs are worth it for the change of scene.
Do not pay for a marketed 'private lagoon speedboat tour' to the islands. It bundles the same public islands at a large markup; the public ACTV vaporetto reaches Murano and Burano for the price of a water-bus ticket.
