The Rental Car Center is reached by the free-standing MIA Mover automated people-mover on the 3rd level between the Dolphin and Flamingo garages; Uber, Lyft and taxi pickups are on the arrival ground level outside baggage claim.
Florida does not require an International Driving Permit; carry your full UK photocard licence, which is sufficient to drive and to collect the hire car.

Shark Valley is about 25 miles west of Miami via US-41 (Tamiami Trail), off the Florida Turnpike; the drive is roughly 45 minutes. Confirm the route on the day.
The Shark Valley vehicle gate admits cars 8:30 AM to 6:00 PM daily. The Homestead (Ernest F. Coe) and Gulf Coast entrances are open 24 hours; visitor centres run roughly 9AM-5PM in wet season.
Book the Shark Valley tram ahead in peak (December to April) season, as the entrance queue is slow. The tram is the official NPS concession, bookable at sharkvalleytramtours.com.
The Shark Valley tram is a two-hour narrated tour along a 15-mile paved loop into the Everglades. If animal welfare matters, this national-park option is a more responsible pick than a commercial airboat-and-captive-gator show.
Do not feed or approach wildlife: NPS reminds visitors not to feed animals in the park. Airboats are also not permitted deep inside the National Park, so any airboat ride runs outside the boundary on the Tamiami Trail.
As of the NPS update dated 23 June 2026, Everglades National Park is open; only minor peripheral and wilderness closures apply, and the main entrances are unaffected.
The official NPS park concessioner runs a roughly two-hour narrated tram along the 15-mile loop to the observation tower, with wild gators seen from a raised trail and no captive shows; May to 18 December departures are 9:30, 11:00, 2:00 and 4:00.
If you want an airboat, this Tamiami Trail operator publishes clear rates and runs a ride plus a wildlife show; airboats are not permitted deep inside the park, so operators sit on the corridor at the periphery.
Drive to the marina for a naturalist-guided snorkel tour on wild reef, no captive animals. Biscayne National Park is 95 percent water, so the point is a boat tour rather than a car park. Several tours leave from Coconut Grove (Dinner Key Marina), closer to South Beach than Homestead.
Advance online reservation is advised. Tours are naturalist-guided and run daily; check which depart from Coconut Grove versus Homestead when you book.
Biscayne National Park is free to enter and about 95 percent water, so the point of a visit is a boat or snorkel tour with the concessioner rather than driving to a car park.
Do not book the Miami Seaquarium for marine life: it is permanently closed since October 2025 after a county eviction citing animal-welfare violations. Choose wild-habitat tours instead.
The Dante Fascell Visitor Center is listed open 7 days 9AM-5PM and Convoy Point grounds 7AM-5:30PM, but the NPS page was self-dated 2021, so reconfirm seasonal hours before travel.
Plan the outdoor time early or late: summer brings afternoon thunderstorms and highs in the mid-to-high 80s F, so a morning departure avoids the worst of the heat and storms.
The official NPS-authorised concessioner runs naturalist-guided, wild-reef snorkelling with no captive animals; crucially for a South Beach base, several tours depart from Coconut Grove (Dinner Key Marina), closer than the Homestead visitor centre.

British citizens need an approved ESTA or a visa to enter or transit the USA, and your passport must be valid for the length of your stay. Apply only on the official site, esta.cbp.dhs.gov, or the official mobile app. You cannot use an ESTA and must apply for a visa instead if you have been arrested (even without conviction), have a criminal record, have been refused entry to or deported from the US, or have overstayed a prior ESTA. You are also blocked from ESTA if you were in Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, Somalia, Sudan, Syria or Yemen on or after March 2011, or in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021. Verify the live fee on the official site before paying.
Under Florida Statute 509.214, any automatic operations charge (covering service charges, automatic gratuities, credit card surcharges and delivery fees) must be shown on the menu and on the face of the bill, with separate lines for gratuity, an operations charge, and sales tax. Many Miami restaurants add one. Read the receipt before you add anything so you do not tip twice.
City beaches always prohibit alcohol and smoking. Also banned: cigarettes, coolers, inflatable devices, tents, tables, loud music, glass containers, and styrofoam, plastic straws and balloons. Amplified music needs a city permit. On peak weekends (Thursdays to Sundays in March 2026), security checkpoints screen bags for prohibited items at select beach entrances. Enforcement is active.

February is the most popular month, with the driest, lowest-humidity conditions and the highest prices; January to March is the sweet spot. Summer (June to August) brings afternoon thunderstorms, higher humidity and highs in the mid-to-high 80s F, with August cheapest but hottest. The Atlantic hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, peaking around 10 September, so a summer trip carries genuine storm-disruption risk. Plan outdoor activity for early or late in the day.
US medical treatment is expensive, with no special arrangements for British visitors, and some hospitals ask non-US residents for a deposit on admission. Travel insurance is strongly advised, though not legally required for entry. No entry vaccination is required; there is no malaria risk in the USA.
The Miami Seaquarium is permanently closed. It shut in October 2025 after 70 years, following bankruptcy and a Miami-Dade County eviction citing a history of animal-welfare violations, and the site is being redeveloped. Any listing or older guide still promoting it as open is stale. For marine life, choose wild-habitat options instead: a Biscayne snorkel tour or the Shark Valley tram.
