The FCDO flags an increased wildfire risk across Portugal from April to October, when it is hot and dry and fires can start anywhere — relevant to the rural Douro Valley. It rarely affects a river cruise or a rail town, but heed any local warnings and any advice from your guides or crew during valley excursions.
There is no malaria risk in Portugal, so no anti-malarial tablets are needed.
