Whale sharks in South Ari are mostly resident juvenile males, so sightings run year-round there — unlike the seasonal manta aggregation at Hanifaru (May–December).
Never let a boat chase, crowd or let guests touch whale sharks or mantas. Since Regulation 2024/R-96, keep 3m from a whale shark's body, 4m from its tail; max 3 vessels; no touching, feeding, flash or selfie sticks. Choose an operator that obeys this.
At Hanifaru Bay, scuba diving and fishing are banned — it is snorkel-only, with tourist and boat limits, scheduled entry days, speed limits, fixed entry and exit routes, and EPA Biosphere Reserve rangers on site. It is a managed, capped site, not an open swim.

Since 15 April 2025, entry to the Maldives is not granted on Israeli passports (Third Amendment to the Immigration Act, Law No. 01/2007). There is no visa-on-arrival exception. Dual nationals must enter on a non-Israeli passport. If this affects your party, resolve it before booking flights — it is a hard entry block, not a formality.
You must complete the IMUGA Traveller Declaration within 96 hours (4 days) before your flight arrives. It is mandatory and free, submitted only on the official government portal imuga.immigration.gov.mv. Third-party sites charging for 'IMUGA assistance' or a 'Maldives visa' are resellers — the declaration and the visa-on-arrival are both free. Not completing it can delay or block entry.

On a remote island, evacuation cover is a genuine practical necessity, not a box-tick. Emergency ambulance is 102.
There is no malaria risk in the Maldives and no antimalarial tablets are needed. However, there is a risk of dengue and chikungunya (and Zika), all spread by daytime-biting mosquitoes, so bite avoidance is worth it even on a resort island. For vaccines, tetanus is recommended for most travellers; hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid and rabies only for some. Check with a travel clinic at least four to six weeks before you go.
The local currency is the Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) and all major credit cards are accepted. On an all-inclusive island the reality is cashless: purchases go on a room tab settled by card at checkout, so there is no need to obtain Rufiyaa for a pure resort stay. The only cash use-cases are discretionary tips and any purchases on a local-island excursion.
